The morning of June 29, 2025, at vNellis Air Force Base, Nevada, buzzed with a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. The Virtual 303rd Fighter Group, a unit woven into the fabric of the NTTR over the past years, was preparing for its ferry flight to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany to continue training operations. For the pilots, this was more than a change of station; it was a farewell to the skies where they’d honed their craft, forged bonds, and left their mark on the NTTR’s rugged ranges.

The flight consisted of six aircraft: four A-10 Thunderbolt IIs (tail #'s 78-0605 Rattler Rattler , 78-0655 Matty8251 Matty8251 , 79-0119 Papa Flare Papa Flare , 79-0118 Brooklyn Brooklyn ) and two F-16 Fighting Falcons (tail #'s 86-0267 Wing Wing , 85-1410 Duchess Duchess ). Each jet bore the wear of countless training sorties and exercises that had tested both machine and pilot. Leading the formation was "Papa Flare" in A-10 tail#79-0119, his steady hand and seasoned instincts guiding the group. In echelon right, "Wing" F-16 tail#86-0267 assisted with leading the formation, ensuring to keeping the group tight. “Alright, 303rd, let’s make this one for the books,” Papa Flare called over the comms, his voice calm but carrying the weight of the moment.

The morning didn’t start without hiccups. A ground maintenance issue with A-10 79-0118, compounded by a warping desync in the virtual systems, pushed takeoff back by nearly an hour. "Mattie" piloting 78-0655, ran through checklists in the cockpit, his patience tested. “Nellis is giving us one last headache for the road,” he said with a wry smile, his voice crackling over the radio. Papa Flare kept the team focused, coordinating with ground crews while Wing ran through formation briefs one last time. “We’ve got time,” Wing said coolly. “Let’s make sure it’s perfect.”

Once the issue was resolved, the late takeoff roared into the sky, Papa Flare’s A-10 leading the charge along side "Brooklyn" "Mattie" and "Rattler" with Wing’s F-16 tucked in tight on his right with "Duchess". Nellis AFB Public Affairs had planned a combat camera photoshoot to capture the 303rd’s departure, and the pilots were determined to deliver. They banked southbound over the Las Vegas Strip, the city’s neon lights a dazzling contrast to the sunrise. The formation swept east, tracing the bold lines of the Hoover Dam, its concrete curves dwarfed by the jets above. Over Lake Mead, the water gleamed under the morning sun, and Papa Flare felt a twinge of nostalgia as he called for everyone to descend 100FT AGL. “Last dance with this desert,” he said quietly, his eyes scanning the horizon.

Screenshots will be posted later this week via Website and Discord. The images, soon to be shared as potential new snazzy desktop wallpapers by Public Affairs, would capture not just the jets but the spirit of the 303rd—a Fighter Group defined by grit, perseverance and camaraderie over the years.

As the cameras clicked, the formation climbed, turning east for the transatlantic journey to Spangdahlem. Papa Flare and Wing led the way checking out of Los Angeles Control ARTCC and into Albuquerque Control ARTCC freqs, their aircraft a beacon for the others. In the cockpits, the pilots settled into the rhythm for the long flight. Piddle packs ready. All flight members gave some words of remembrance of ops around the NTTR over their "DCS or Realworld careers" and reflected on those late-night training sorties and debriefs that turned into laughter-filled war stories. Brooklyn and Rattler as a newer Studs in the group expressed their thoughts about the future, eager to prove themselves in Germany. “This place made us who we are,” Wing said over the comms as they crossed into international airspace and began flowing into Arizona. Papa Flare’s voice came back, steady and sure: “Spangdahlem’s just the next chapter.”

The Nevada desert faded into memory, but the Virtual 303rd Fighter Group flew on, ready to carve new stories into the skies of Germany...
